Apple WWDC 2013 Recap Overview (MacBook Air, Mac Pro, iOS 7, OS X Mavericks)

Apple’s Worldwide Developer’s Conference has come and gone in the space of two hours. Other websites and platforms have undoubtedly already posted up their recaps and overviews, but surely non can ever be as brief as Technouz but yet still be packed full of all the info.

Please note, that to keep this short and interesting to read I’ve probably missed out a lot of information. You can watch the full keynote here. Without any further ado, here’s what was announced in Apple’s WWDC 2013 and everything you need to know.

MacBook Air 2013 with all-day battery life

As mentioned above, the biggest new feature of the 2013 MacBook Air refresh is an all day battery life. Apple have managed to tweak the hardware and components inside the popular notebook to squeeze an additional 5 hours of battery life from the ultra-thin and lightweight machines. This takes the 11-inch battery life to 9 hours and a full 12 hours for the 13-inch counterpart.

To help with battery life, the new overhaul of the MacBook Air lineup includes the addition on Intel’s new Haswell processors which are supposed to be quicker, smaller and more energy efficient.

The world’s favourite ultrabook slash everyday netbook has also become even better value for money. Apple have upgraded the standard-spec, super-responsive, flash memory to 128GB on the 11-inch and 256GB on the 13-inch whilst keeping the price tag the same at £849 ($999) and £949 ($1099) respectively.

The refresh also includes the new WiFi 802.11ac adapter (with backwards compatibility of course) and an Intel HD 5000 graphics card. Not bad for a starting line-up!

OS X 10.9 Grumpy Cat Mavericks

After announcing they’d come off the theme of cats and steer clear of sea lions, Apple showed off a refined operating system with plenty of undercover updates. Features include extended support for multiple displays making the user experience more natural and connected. Documents could now be tagged upon saving while iBooks and Maps also make an appearance in the new version of OS X. There is now a better Safari browser with more tools for users to explore as well as a deeper integration of iCloud features all around the new OS.

Notifications on resume, as well as quick shortcuts within notifications were the most applauded features.

iOS 7: flatter, cleaner, sexier and more-amazing-er

Some rumours ended up being proved false, whilst others true. iOS 7 was definitely cleaned up, polished and made more… Erm, elegant? sofisticated?

Windows are now layered, so by default transparency levels on the UI give a deeper feel. This comes hand-in-hand with the 3D-ish wallpapers that respond to the orientation of your device so you can actually see behind the icons on your springboard!

The new mobile operating system also includes a new multitasking feature similar to that of the jailbreak tweak Auxo, and well as shortcuts to settings such as WiFi toggle, Airplane mode and several others. The notification centre also got revamped and now looks cleaner with a much better way if displaying information you need to see.

Apple WWDC 2013 iOS 7 Multitasking

Siri found a new voice, new commands and new tricks, while the photo application can now automatically sort your camera roll into Moments based on the time, day and place you took your snaps. The camera application wasn’t left behind either. Features like panoramic images, filters and inboard cropping are now firmly embedded in the iOS ecosystem.

The weather app is now smarter, the mail app is cleaner and more inviting while the Safari browser was completely redesigned with iCloud at the core of everything.

What else did I miss?

Apple also announced an iRadio service similar to spotify. It will be built into the iTunes app on all iOS and OS X devices and will let you stream music. For iTunes Match customers it’s free and has no ads, for everyone else it’s free with Ad support.
