FlatIcons For iPad Review: The Most Complete Icon Theme Comes To iPad!

Earlier I wrote about a theme called FlatIcons which brought an iOS 7 UI to your iPhone. More recently, the developer (Steve Garwood) has released support for the iPad too – and he hasn’t let the standards slip at all.

FlatIcons Winterboard Theme

Just like the iPhone counter-part, this theme does a very good job of replicating the iOS 7 interface. It brings brighter colours and more flatter icons with a minimalistic flair to your springboard, and mixed in with a few other tweaks it can bring a whole new experience to your Apple device.

At the moment, it seems the Winterboard theme brings only new icons and backgrounds/linens to the iPad. Just like the iPhone version, you can choose between a cleaner square set of icons, or the traditional rounded corners.

FlatIcons For iPad Preferences

The FlatIcons For iPad theme replaces all standard iOS icons aswell as a few third-party applications too. The changes can be seen on the springboard, notification centre, settings app and multitasking bar. This is good because it means there are no inconsistencies within the tweak – and this is usually what can cause a potentially great theme to not work well.

The developer has set up a website where users of the theme can request changes to icons. So for example, the BBC iPlayer app is not yet supported by the tweak so I can head over to www.flaticonsios.com and request for the icon to be modified. This is usually brought as an update through Cydia.

I have been incredibly impressed with the amount of time and effort that has gone into making this Winterboard theme. It is arguably the best all-over theme that brings your iOS device closer to replicating iOS 7. Not only that, but the developer has promised full dedicated support so you are guaranteed good bang for your buck as your theme will be kept up to date for the next few years atleast! The only downside I see is that the theme doesn’t cover everything yet. The iPhone version completely changes the UI including the Phone app, splashscreens, the lockscreen and almost every other feature found on iOS 6. I am running this theme on my iPad 3 on iOS 5 and have only seen changes to icons and general backgrounds, but no changes to aesthetics within Safari as seen on the iPhone version.

Do not take that as a reason to why you shouldn’t try the theme. It was released only a few days ago, and the developer has a proven track record of updating his work – so give it a few weeks and I am certain this theme will atleast match or perhaps even outclass it’s iPhone alternative!

FlatIcons For iPad is available to purchase from the Mac Citi repo on Cydia for $1.99. The developer is Steve Garwood and you’ll need to search for ‘FlatIcons for iPad’. If you don’t have an iPad, I would definitely recommend you check out the FlatIcons theme for iPhone here.
