Android Dominating Europe & US Marketshare

You probably thought Apple’s iPhone dominated the global market, and if not that – the Western market for sure. Well, you weren’t wrong, I thought the same.

But latest stats from ComTech have revealed that Android’s market share has almost doubled in most Western markets since June 2011. From hold second and third place last year, Android has overtaken the leading iOS platform in Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, United States and Australia!

While Android’s share has almost doubled over the year, it is not surprising to see that RIM have lost a few percentage points in every market. What the tables, and the growth of both Android and iOS, point at is preposterous decline in Nokia’s Symbian. Not too long ago, before the days of Steve Jobs’ iPhone and Google’s Android – and in fact RIM’s Blackberry; Nokia enjoyed a smartphone monopoly. But the tables above show a market share decline over more than ten-folds in almost every market!

We are constantly bombarded with news of RIM edging closer to the death of the once-popular Blackberry, but what about Nokia? Since the apparent failing of their expensive, ugly and inefficient Symbian OS, Nokia have adopted Windows onto their new device and are once again reaching the headlines to perhaps releasing ‘The best Windows phone‘. I think not.
