Sandstrom SBS2112 2.1 Wireless Speakers Review: Superb Style & Sound

Good sound, connectivity and style usually seem to be mutually exclusive when it comes to desktop and entertainment speakers. Finding a speaker set with good sound, that looks good next to your monitor and gives you more freedom than a standard 3.5mm jack also comes at a price. But this problem has been wiped clean over by the Sandstrom SBS2112 2.1 Wireless Speakers.

Sandstrom SBS212 Wireless Speakers

The speakers come packaged in a fairly large box despite their relatively compact size. Inside is the subwoofer unit, two satellite speakers and a cable to connect to a 3.5mm jack. There is also a quick start guide which will help you get set up for the first time.

The two satellite speakers have 9W of power each and follow a clean, tall design. The right satellite speaker has two knobs on the front to control on/off, volume and bass aswell as two buttons to the side which allow you to switch between sources and enable bluetooth discovery (Bluetooth!? Yes, we’ll get to that in a minute!). Both satellite speakers have thin cable each which connects to the subwoofer.

The subwoofer measures around 240H x 220W x 260D (sizes in millimetres) and produces a modest 22W of power giving the setup a total output power of 40W which is considerably larger compared to any other desktop speakers of the same size and price. The front of the subwoofer carries a large circular grill aswell as a bass-reflex port on the side. The rear features a power cable and sockets to connect to a 3.5mm output port and the satellite speakers. All in all, the subwoofer unit keeps perfectly in sync with the style of the satellites and can bring style to any desktop setup.

Combined, the total output power of the speakers is 40W covering a range of 40Hz to 130Hz with the subwoofer and 20KHz to 130KHz from the satellites. The entire setup weighs a total of 5kg.

The three things that make the Sandstrom SBS2112 2.1 Wireless Speakers so good are:

  • style and build quality
  • connectivity
  • value for money

Sandstrom seem to focus all their products around the idea of good, modern style. The wireless speakers do not fail to disappoint on this occasion as they manage to fit in well with almost any setup. Whether you go for a minimalistic look and hide the subwoofer or prefer everything on display, the high quality build of the components gives a premium feel to your workspace. The subwoofer unit however, begs not to be hidden under the desk out of site. It’s strong and durable aswell as boasting a smooth matte-type finish whcih makes it difficult to not make it the centre-piece of your desk.

The Sandstrom SBS2112 2.1 Wireless Speakers are titled wireless for a reason. They have bluetooth connectivity! You can easily pair it to another bluetooth enabled device to enable playback through the speakers. Though you won’t have control over the bass level you can remotely change the volume and track. Pairing is incredibly easy and works very well up to ten meters, any further and the audio quality does begin to fall. The 40W/70dB output power compliments this very well as the speakers can easily fill my house (and garden) with sound whilst allowing me to remotely control what I want to hear!

When I was looking for speakers, I wasn’t looking for anything special. Initially I had a budget of £50 ($75) and simply required a 2.1 system. I came across several options from Logitech and Creative on Amazon which fell well under my budget. But for a similar price the Sandstrom speakers gave me wireless connectivity and more power which felt more appealing at the time. Before purchasing the Sandstrom speakers, I searched online for some reviews and found very little in the way of informative videos and write-ups. Some forums recommended I stay away from Sandstrom since it was such an unknown brand. It seems, Sandstrom produce under the Currys/PC World partnership and hence are exclusively only available from Currys-PC World stores in the UK.

Never-the-less, I took the risk and haven’t looked back since. These are incredibly powerful speakers, with stylish looks at very good value for money. I have no regrets in purchasing the Sandstrom SBS2112 2.1 Wireless Speakers  and believe I got the best deal for a set of speakers under £50.

I strongly suggest you head into a local Currys store and try a display unit. It may not be as powerful as the Bose system next to it, but it’s also 15x cheaper than any other set-up that offers similar features. You may also want to keep an eye out on Amazon and eBay where they occasionally sell for around £20-£30.
